S.M. Hutchens, at Touchstone’s Mere Comments, reproduced a great list of books for children from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The list is broken down in age ranges, and includes most of the great classics. If you’re home schooling, or if you want your child to read beyond what they are given in school, this is a great start. Age ranges include grades (for American schools) K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12.

The list is by no means complete, and the comments to the article have many helpful additions. One link of note from the comments is the 1000 Great Books list from classical education homeschooling moms.
