++Orombi of Uganda (did I use the ‘+’ sign right?) wrote a piece called “What is Anglicanism?” I believe more and more that the voice of the Global South will be heard as we continue to fight amongst ourselves in the West. Regarding no previous discussions in particular, this statement made an impression on me:
The Bible cannot appear to us a cadaver, merely to be dissected, analyzed,
and critiqued, as has been the practice of much modern higher biblical
criticism. Certainly we engage in biblical scholarship and criticism, but
what is important to us is the power of the Word of God precisely as the
Word of God-written to bring transformation in our lives, our families,
our communities, and our culture.
Another random thought: For those who still cling to the false assertion that the Bible discriminates against women, they need to remember that historically, the commands of both the Old and New Testaments provided far more protection and freedom to women than they previously knew. This proves true even today:
In some traditional African societies, women were denied benefits because
of various superstitions. For example, some societies believed that if
women ate chicken they would grow beards. In that culture, women, then,
never ate chicken. When the Bible came alive during the East African Revival
of the 1930s, the Holy Spirit convicted men of such sins of oppression
and began the progressive empowerment of women that is continuing today.
So, for another example, the African tradition of polygamy and divorce
at will left many women neglected and often destitute. The biblical teaching
of marriage between one man and one woman in a loving, lifelong relationship
liberated not only women but also the institution of marriage and family.
He goes on to share a history of Martyrs for Christ that helped the Christian faith spread through Uganda, from the English Reformation through today. Following that is a summary of the Evangelical nature of Ugandan Anglicans that reads like the Evangelical teachers I’ve been under in the Free Church for the past 12 years.
Much more is said, specifically about the issues facing the worldwide Anglican Communion, and the position of many bishops in the Global South. Even if you are not Anglican, this is an important article to read, as it represents a clear defense of the Christian faith, and the need to protect the Church from those things which would compromise faithfulness to the teaching from God in scripture.
